Our meeting this week brought us information and a personal real life story about the devastating disease known as Alzheimer's. This unwelcome guest has also visited several members who told us about how it has affected their lives after the speaker, Donna Gysler, told her story.

Our welcomed guest came to us from Silverado Senior Living -a "Memory Impairment" assistance facility. She told us of her own ordeal with her mother-in-law who developed Alzhiemer's and how it affected her life.
Donna brought her MIL to live with her and her husband and naturally assumed they could care for her themselves. She soon found that as the disease progressed it became too much for she and her husband to manage safely and effectively.
Donna also noted that, now as she reflects on the past, she can see that her family was not providing the kind of enrichment her mother-in-law needed to live an active life to the best of her ability.

She turned to Silverado to seek assistance in caring for her mother. Silverado partnered with her during "at home" care of her mother, then Silverado was there when her mother progressed and required assisted living facilities too. She also utilized Silverado's hospice service when it was required and she was so thankful for the wonderful services supplied by the facility that she joined their PR team. She now speaks to tell the community about the benefits of this unique facility. The 2 main points that she put across about Silverado is that they are "Memory Impairment" specialists, and they like to have fun. Each employee is given special training to help them deal with the residents who all suffer from some stage of memory impairment, and it is not rare to catch an employee dancing, reading, chatting or simply sitting with a resident. Family is encouraged to be involved and visit often at Silverado and they try to make it a home-like atmosphere. They even have several pets, a garden and a putting green on site.
